Eurocare helps lift the lid on alcohol lobbying

Eurocare and a range of members contributed to an investigation broadcasted on February 2023 by Belgium’s RTBF called "Les stratégies des alcooliers pour nous faire boire" (Alcohol industries' strategies to get us to drink), helping to explain the importance of countering the lobbying efforts of the alcohol industry.

Raising alcohol prices has been found to be the most effective way to reduce alcohol harm, both through taxation and by introducing minimum prices. Eurocare works with members to argue for national governments to reduce alcohol affordability.

Reducing alcohol availability is another of the WHO’s three “best buys” in reducing alcohol harm at the lowest cost, requiring detailed understanding of how to improve local licencing laws, and latterly to online retail, which may be cross-border.

Consumers widely underestimate the damage alcohol does to health through its contribution to over 200 conditions, including liver disease heart disease and cancer. Eurocare works with experts to combat misinformation and to ensure the evidence base is properly understood.
