Tim Stockwell

Tim Stockwell has 40+ years’ experience as a researcher, administrator, educator and clinician in the UK, Australia and Canada. His research has covered many aspects of substance use policy, prevention, treatment methods, liquor licensing issues, taxation and the measurement of drinking patterns and their consequences. He has written over 250 peer reviewed journal articles and 150 books, chapters and reports. He has worked with international organisations (WHO, UNDCP) and many provincial, state and national governments.

He was Director of the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (formerly the Centre for Addictions Research of BC) from 2004 until 2020 (a WHO Collaborating Centre) and, previously, Director of Australia’s National Drug Research Institute. He also served as a Director of Australia’s Alcohol Education and Research Foundation at the invitation of the prime minister, as President of the international Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Studies on Alcohol, co-director of the Michael Smith Foundation BC Mental Health and Addiction Research Network, member of Canada's National Alcohol Strategy Advisory Committee and of WHO’s Technical Advisory Groups on a) alcohol and drug epidemiology b) alcohol labelling.
