Eurocare's Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on 26th June 2024 at the Impact Hub in Ljubljana. It paved the way for the high-level conference scheduled for the following two days also in Slovenia.
The AGM featured several presentations from members. The panel discussion with medical societies, including United European Gastroenterology (UEG) and the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), focused on the challenges and opportunities in advocating for alcohol policy within medical communities. This was followed by a presentation by the Danish Cancer Society, which discussed approaches and experiences in national alcohol communication campaigns, aiming to reduce alcohol consumption.
The session also included a detailed exploration of the history and future of the EU Alcohol and Health Forum, with contributions from the Dutch Institute for Alcohol Policy (STAP) and Fundación Salud y Comunidad. These discussions highlighted best practices in national alcohol forums and the development of effective alcohol plans in countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal. The AGM concluded with a session on European Parliament and alcohol policy, featuring speakers from IOGT-NTO and Alcohol Action Ireland, who examined recent reports and strategies to counter commercial influences on public health. Niels Garnes, Head of Policy and Communications at IOGT Norway, provided an in-depth review of the Alcohol Labelling and Health Warning International Expert Group (ALHWIEG) activities over the past year. He emphasised the group's role in enhancing advocacy and policy related to alcohol labelling and health warnings. He also highlighted the legislative advancements in Ireland and the ongoing international efforts to keep alcohol labelling on the global agenda.
A final highlight was the presentation by Dr. Zaza Tsereteli of the organisation Good Health and Wellbeing Georgia. Following the presentation, they were unanimously approved as a new member. Congratulations and welcome to Eurocare!
Overall, the AGM fostered meaningful discussions and provided members with essential insights, strategies, and support to effectively advance alcohol policy and public health initiatives across Europe.
