Open Day of the Alcohol Forum
The 'Open Day' of the Alcohol and Health Forum took place in Brussels on Thursday 17 April 2008. This represented a valuable opportunity for interested parties, observers and the press to follow the work that has been carried to date. The meeting was attended by nearly two hundred delegates.
Eurocare, along with some of its members, assured a strong presence with a visible stall containing diverse publications and displays of various alcoholic drinks and gadgets as examples of 'bad marketing.' Also, there was slideshow of 'bad' advertisements, linking alcohol to social and sexual success. Lastly, Eurocare produced a poster on behalf of all NGO's taking part in the Forum, entitled ”NGO's working together to prevent alcohol related harm in Europe.”
The morning session of the Open Forum consisted of three key note presentations demonstrating the roles of actors at global, national and municipal level to address alcohol related harm:
Maria Renstrom (WHO Headquarters), Charlotta Rehman (Sweden) and the representative of the Federal Drug Commissioner of Germany.
The afternoon session consisted of two panel debates relating to the work carried out in the two task forces:
The Marketing Communication Panel was chaired by Robert Madelin (DG SANCO) and featured Anders Ulstein (Eurocare), Catherine Van Reeth (Brewers of Europe) and Dominic Lyle (European Association of Communication Agencies).
The Youth-related Aspects of Alcohol Panel was chaired by Michael Hubel (DG SANCO) and featured Nathalie Rodriguez McCullough (Alcohol Policy Youth Network), Julie Teng (European Youth Forum) and Elizabeth Crossick (Brown- Forman and Chairwoman of EFRD).
